This is our culture corner. Your weekly Egyptian cultural compass.

The intimacy of handcraft begins with the touch of a hand. An artisan’s fingers meet the fabric, and through a slow process of making, the material begins to transform. Stitch by stitch, it becomes a vessel for memory, a reflection of a woman’s identity, and ultimately, an expression of a nation’s cultural soul.

Embroidery, in particular, carries within its threads a dialogue between Egypt’s ancient past and its evolving creative identity. In ancient Egypt, linen held a central place in textile production, while surviving garments and fragments bear witness to a mastery of weaving and textile ornamentation.

This kind of legacy endures in the hands of contemporary artisans, who continue to weave meaning into cloth through regional motifs and distinctive techniques. Among them is the intricate art of tambour embroidery, where delicate stitches are brought to life with beads and sequins, lending the fabric a luminous richness.

Each handmade piece becomes a meeting of stories: the woman who makes it her own, the inspiration woven into its design, and the artisan’s hands through which it comes to life.

Embroidered Feminine

In Egypt, embroidery carries a language of its own, one shaped by the hands of women and woven into the details of everyday life. Inspired by the floral motifs and delicate ornamentation of traditional Egyptian homes, Shahira Lasheen’s debut bag collection revisits the nostalgia of a grandmother’s living room, translating its familiar beauty into a contemporary expression of luxury.

Beyond its decorative purpose, embroidery becomes a bridge between generations, connecting the textile traditions of ancient Egypt with the evolving language of contemporary design. From historical needlework techniques to the intricate tambour embroidery adorned with beads and sequins, the craft continues to preserve a rich cultural memory while allowing space for reinvention.

The choice of color, the rhythm of each stitch, and the smallest embellishment contribute to a piece that carries both the intention of its maker and the individuality of its wearer.

Assiut Embroidery

Born in the heart of Upper Egypt, tulle-bi-telli is a textile tradition in which delicate netting meets the quiet brilliance of silver and gold. Known as Assiut embroidery, this intricate craft transforms simple mesh into a canvas of geometric patterns, floral motifs, and symbolic figures, each woven through the patient gestures of the artisan’s hand.

Rooted in Egypt’s long history of textile ornamentation, the craft carries echoes of an ancient relationship between fabric, adornment, and identity. Over generations, its shimmering patterns have found their place in the rituals of everyday life, from the shawls gifted to brides before marriage to the garments worn by performers, women, and members of Egypt’s social elite. Its beauty eventually travelled beyond the country’s borders, finding its way into Hollywood productions and the collections of international fashion houses.

Photographing Egypt

For visual and cultural inspiration, this photography collection documents aspects of Egyptian life, including the colourful textile pavilions of Cairo’s Tentmakers’ Street.

When John Feeney arrived in Egypt in 1963 to make a documentary, he intended to stay for a year. Instead, he remained for four decades, capturing the country through the lens of his camera. Photographing Egypt brings together a collection of rare colour photographs that document both the grandeur of Egypt’s history and the details of its everyday life.

From the solemn procession of Gamal Abdel Nasser’s funeral and the last Nile flood to the vibrant textile pavilions of Tentmakers’ Street, the domes of Cairo, and the rituals of traditional life, Feeney’s photographs preserve a portrait of Egypt shaped by memory, place, and human experience.

Silver Miners Have Outrun Silver Since 2020

Since March 2020, silver has returned about 402%. The silver miners returned 445%.

That gap is the leverage our research team focuses on. When silver rises, a producer's net asset value can rise much faster, and share prices tend to follow. It works in both directions, and a mine is only as good as the company running it.

The Ultimate Silver Playbook shows how the team separates the miners worth owning from the rest, and which silver stocks are on its watchlist now. It's free.

Falarubbama

Falarubbama by Maryam Shehab is an invitation to sit with uncertainty, to embrace the wisdom of patience, and to place our trust in God even when His plans remain beyond our understanding. It speaks to the delicate art of surrendering, not as an act of giving up, but as an act of faith; of believing that what is withheld may hold a mercy we cannot yet see, and that what is delayed is never beyond God’s knowledge. Listen to Falarubbama with a heart willing to reflect, and let it remind you that even in the longest seasons of waiting, there is meaning in patience, grace in surrender, and solace in knowing that God’s wisdom is greater than anything we can comprehend.
